Christmas at Our House-2011

Like thousands of grandmothers, I spend weeks & weeks getting ready for Christmas Eve. I shop, cook, bake, decorate and lay awake at night hoping that I chose the perfect gifts for each of my precious grandchildren.

On Christmas Eve last year, we gathered in the kitchen as we always do. Christmas music was playing, about four different conversations were taking place at the same time, and I was scurrying around pulling the last minute hors d’oeuvres out of the oven.

I felt a little tap on my back. I turned around and there was my darling granddaughter, Sophie, holding out a small box for me.

“Nonny, here’s a gift for you. Will you open it now?”

“For me?” I exclaimed. “How sweet of you, Sophie. Of course, I’ll open it now.”

Inside the box was a beautiful little bracelet with the words- “Peace, Love and Joy”. Tears filled my eyes as I reached down and hugged my lovely ten year-old granddaughter. I was the one who was trying to give them the “best gifts”, and she was the one who gave me a gift I will treasure always!

I gazed around the room at my family and realized they are gifts in life that I cherish most I’ll keep that bracelet forever because it took a ten-year old child to remind me that the true meaning of Christmas is- ‘Peace, Love and Joy”.

That night, I had it all.
